Started to play ...

Here's a peek.

HELP!

Besides pins or masking tape

there must be a better way

to keep these cut strips of fabric on the backing fabric

so that I can keep moving them around.

April's Challenge

It's inside of my house.

I tried to make it unrecognizable ...

although I don't think I succeeded in doing that!

I've ordered a piece of fabric which should arrive any day.

This is an idea I've had for a long time.

A mini for me ...

I cut up my least favorite block & used it in the corners.

And another mini for AAQI ...

March Challenge

Today I had some time to play with four blocks made

a few years ago when I was learning how to paper piece.

I've always liked them.

Maybe a mini quilt with wide colorful borders?

Maybe a table runner with a narrow border using a competing graphic?

Maybe the start of a large quilt?

Maybe I need to play some more!

My random act of kindness for today ...

Finish the binding, add some hand-stitching & off it goes.

My Word Is ...

This is not my original word.

But the more I thought about my original word

the more associations I had -

until finally I settled on the word Trust.

It's a personal word & does not refer to trusting others

but rather trusting myself ...

my instincts, impulses, thoughts, decisions, etc.

Fabulous tree!

I got Margaret's fabulous challenge quilt yesterday

and it's already hanging in my front hall.

She had posted little peeks earlier, but it is sooooo great in person

with all those little bits and pieces in it, the rick rack, and the sequins,

and I love the zig zag quilting in the background.

Thanks so much for the great swap, and all the extra goodies.

I finished Beth's quilt last night.

Here's a little taste before it goes off in the mail.

Nov Challenge

For inspiration I'm using Jessie Pettway's "Housetop" .

My color choices are based on the Urchin Tones seed card below.

I'm frustrated because fabric ordered weeks ago

from two places is backordered & I have been waiting ... & waiting.

And not wanting to wait any longer I am using what I have

even though my colors are off.

Just HAD to start!

I so love this process ... slow & meditative:

choose a fabric ... cut one strip & sew ... cut another & sew ...

using scissors ... & my eyes ... no ruler

(except for the 6" solid)

I have no plan yet for how the blocks will be arranged ...

so many possibilities.

Finally Decided

Urchin Tones

Can't believe how much time I've spent on this!

But since I have never made a quilt to put on my own bed,

I am making this my goal.

It will be soft, calm & muted.

This fits the challenge since my color preference is just the opposite.

Now to assemble fabrics ... i.e., shop!

More Card Trick Derivations

After posting a few days ago,

I decided I wanted this quilt to be square.

So I made a few more blocks

and added a few specks of color.

(Finding the "right" colors was really hard!)

Now the top is done!

Card Trick Challenge

These are the blocks I've made.

(Obviously I didn't follow my own directions!)

Does that mean I've failed the challenge?

(Who cares?)

It was fun & I'm ready to think about how to put it together

and

maybe add another solid color.

Hope I figure it out soon because

I'm dying to start Miki's challenge!

Another Variation

So I made a change on the second block

(maybe the 4 cards in the middle are more obvious)

and

then ...

This was more difficult than I imagined!

Maybe I'm over-thinking the challenge

or

maybe I've got a perceptual problem

related to this block!

Discovery

Yesterday I also got frustrated.

The few blue triangles I had cut out

kept falling off the wall as I moved them around.

And I didn't have enough of one color to make "cards"

and keep track of what I was trying to accomplish.

So I cut out 4 squares of paper for the 4 cards.

Then on each piece I made one slit half way down to the center.

I started at the middle of 1 side & stopped in the middle of the square.

This allowed me to fold under the hidden quarter for all the cards.

(It's easier for me to see the block as a "whole"

rather than a bunch of triangles.)

What I am working on above is distortion ...

the square cards are now rectangles.

Card Trick

This is my first card trick block ever.

(And now I understand Miki's original comment!)

As you can see I might work with only blues ...

that is still one of those "what if" questions.

Next the FUN begins!

October Challenge for Modern 8 Create!

Hi All ...

Hope you are looking forward to the next challenge!

Here it is!

Using only SOLIDS:

1. Make a traditional Card Trick quilt block any size you wish.

2. Make it again but change or distort it in some way(s) -

for example, size, color, proportion, orientation. In other words,

play with it!

3. Using your second block as your model, change it some more.

4. Keep repeating this process - always use the last completed

block to change or distort the next.

5. Make as many blocks as you want.

Your piece will be whatever size you want it to be.

6. Sew your blocks together ... if they are different sizes and you

want a rectangular quilt, add fabric wherever necessary.
